Eastern Uganda Birding tour: Detailed Itinerary with Cost
Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe
Your journey begins with a hotel shuttle pickup from Entebbe International Airport to Precious Guest House. This cozy guesthouse offers a peaceful retreat with beautiful gardens.
It’s a great spot to relax after your flight and get a taste of Ugandan hospitality. Key bird species to look for in the area include the Great Blue Turaco and the African Grey Parrot. Mammals might include the Vervet Monkey.
Day 2: Transfer to Mabira Forest
Meet your guide and head to Griffin Falls Camp in Mabira Forest. The camp is located within the lush rainforest, offering a true immersion in nature. After settling in, you’ll embark on an afternoon of birdwatching. Look out for species like the Nahan’s Francolin and Yellow-throated Tinkerbird. The forest is also home to primates such as the Grey-cheeked Mangabey.
Day 3: Mabira Forest Birding
Spend the entire day exploring the trails of Mabira Forest. This is a prime location for birders, with a high concentration of forest-dwelling species. Target birds include the Speckled Tinkerbird, African Pied Hornbill, and Afep Pigeon. In addition to birds, you might spot other mammals like the Red-tailed Monkey and Giant Forest Squirrel. You’ll spend a second night at Griffin Falls Camp.
Day 4: Transfer to Kapchorwa/Mt. Elgon
Today, you’ll transfer to the Mount Elgon region, a change of scenery from the forest to the mountains. The journey takes you to Home of Friends in Kapchorwa town, a comfortable and well-regarded guesthouse. In the evening, you’ll begin your birding adventure on the slopes of Mt. Elgon. Keep an eye out for species like Jackson’s Francolin and the Moustached Green Tinkerbird. Mammals like the Bushbuck might be seen.
Day 5: Kapkwai Forest Exploration Center
A full day is dedicated to birding at the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Center. The unique montane habitat of Mt. Elgon is home to a variety of endemic and near-endemic birds. Some of the key species to look for are the White-collared Oliveback and African Harrier Hawk. You’ll stay at either Home of Friends or the nearby Sipi River Camp, which is known for its beautiful views and a range of cottages.
Day 6: Sipi Falls and Pian Upe GR
Start your day with a visit to the breathtaking Sipi Falls, an iconic series of three waterfalls. Afterward, you’ll transfer to Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, a vast and semi-arid wilderness. Accommodation for the next several nights will be at the UWA Bandas, which provide a rustic and immersive experience within the reserve. Pian Upe is a spectacular place for unique birds and mammals, which you’ll explore in the coming days.
Day 7: Pian Upe Game Drives
Spend a full day on game drives within Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. This expansive savannah is home to an incredible array of wildlife. You’ll be on the lookout for species like the Secretarybird and Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill. The reserve also boasts unique mammals, including the Oribi, Roan Antelope, and possibly the endangered Cheetah on a night game drive. You’ll stay another night at the UWA Bandas.
Day 8: More Game Drives in Pian Upe
Another full day dedicated to game drives, birding, and wildlife viewing in Pian Upe. You can revisit areas of interest or explore new ones. Key birds to find are the Fox’s Weaver (endemic to the region) and the Karamoja Apalis. Mammals to look for include the Eland, Jackson’s Hartebeest, and Plains Zebra. Depending on your success the previous night, you may choose to do another nocturnal game drive.
Day 9: Game Drives and Night Drive
A third full day to explore the vast expanse of Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. This is an opportunity to focus on any specific birds or mammals you may have missed. The reserve is also home to the threatened Cheetah, so a night game drive is a great chance to see it. Other nocturnal species might include the Leopard and Spotted Hyena. You’ll spend your final night at the UWA Bandas.
Day 10: Matheneko Reserve and Kara-Tunga
Go early with a picnic lunch to Matheneko Reserve, a smaller but equally rewarding area for birding. This reserve is excellent for spotting dry-country birds. Afterward, you’ll transfer to Kara-Tunga Safari Camp. This camp is a unique cultural and adventure hub, providing a base for exploring the Karamoja region. It’s a comfortable and authentic place to rest before your next adventure.
Day 11: Kidepo Valley National Park
Today, you’ll transfer with a picnic lunch to the magnificent Kidepo Valley National Park. The journey offers limited stops, but you will be in one of Uganda’s most remote and stunning parks. Your accommodation will be at the UWA Bandas, which offer basic but comfortable lodging. In the evening, a night game drive offers the chance to see nocturnal animals like the Caracal, Aardwolf, and, with luck, the elusive Cheetah.
Day 12: Kidepo River and Wildlife
Spend the whole day birding and viewing wildlife along the Kidepo River. This area is a crucial water source, attracting a high concentration of animals and birds. Target birds include the Common Ostrich, Karamoja Apalis, and Red-throated Bee-eater. Mammals you might encounter are the Greater Kudu, Eland, and Jackson’s Hartebeest. You’ll return to the UWA Bandas for the night.
Day 13: Narus Valley Exploration
Spend the whole day birding and viewing wildlife along the Kidepo River. This area is a crucial water source, attracting a high concentration of animals and birds. Target birds include the Common Ostrich, Karamoja Apalis, and Red-throated Bee-eater. Mammals you might encounter are the Greater Kudu, Eland, and Jackson’s Hartebeest. You’ll return to the UWA Bandas for the night.
Day 14: Game Walk in Kidepo
Experience the park on foot with a guided game walk. This allows for a unique and intimate interaction with the wilderness. You’ll get up close to plains game like Zebra, Oribi, and Waterbuck, and have a different perspective on the birdlife. The walk offers a chance to learn about the smaller creatures and plants that make up the Kidepo ecosystem. A final night is spent at the UWA Bandas.
Day 15: Transfer to Gulu Town
Today is a full day of travel as you make your way to Gulu town. The journey offers excellent roadside birding opportunities in a new habitat. You’ll be on the lookout for different species not yet encountered. The day ends at the Acholi Inn, a historic hotel in the heart of Gulu. It provides a comfortable stopover with modern amenities, a great place to reflect on your journey so far.
Day 16: Ziwa Rhino Ranch and Departure
On your final day, you’ll transfer back to Entebbe for your return flight. A significant detour is planned to Ziwa Rhino Ranch. This sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can see Southern White Rhinos in the wild. You will enjoy a guided rhino tracking on foot. This final, incredible wildlife encounter marks a perfect end to your safari.
